My nemesis character as an actor is James Peale. My older brother Charles Wilson taught me painting and drawing at an early age in our family garden here in Olde Philadelphia City.
A double “O” brush deftly caressed the porcelain ovals that were to build our “daily bread” fortune in portraiture.
My favorite color is orange. Most of my skin tones and still-lifes are imbued with that color. I am a warm and sensitive man, much quieter than my bombastic brother. My daughter, Rebecca, became a renowned artist, unusual in our day.
As the years slipped by, I stripped away more and more in my paintings the veneers of technical mastery, favoring instead the timeless truth of my subject, be it person or flower.
George Washington favored artistic sittings with me over Stuart’s harsher and more abrasive manner. I painted Washington as humanitarian first, then as heroic and dedicated general and president second. Martha, his wife, always looked up to him in smiling admiration, her blue/grey eyes glazing over now and again.
In Art and Life for me my motto remains :
“Amor Vincit Omnia”; “Love Conquers All” !
P.S. Enclosed I am returning to Mt. Vernon a
friendship ring belonging to Martha, given
her by her husband during courtship days.
With Sincerity,
James Peale
