This is a silver metal I won during the 2014 Independence Philadelphia Dragon Boat Regatta with my team, the Philadelphia Chinatown Dragon Boat Team. I have been a member of this team for the past 4-5 years, practicing every year from late spring through early fall. To me, this is a community that I joined, not a sports team. Being a part of this community has been one of those life-changing experiences. The team and its community have provided me a connection to my heritage in a meaningful way that I have never experienced before. Not only does this community look back on our culture and history, it also looks forward to what it is to be an Asian-American, all the while being inclusive of any race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, and class to its community. Being a part of this community also made me aware of the social struggles of the first-generation immigrants that are different from my background as a first-generation immigrant. Because of it, I have become more aware of social issues such as race, class, economy, and education inequality, which in turn have changed my art practice tremendously. My interactions with this community have given me unlimited resources and inspirations for my artwork, making it more meaningful and fulfilling. I owe all of this to my team, my community. Therefore, I give this silver medal, the first medal I won since I joined the Philadelphia Chinatown Dragon Boat Team, to this project.
