I found this rock in a creek in Wissahickon Park near Forbidden Drive in Philadelphia. It is an example of Wissahickon schist; a type of metamorphic rock formed in sedimentary mud about 500 million years ago. This type of rock is unique to the region. I like to wade in a creek on hot days and when I found this, it reminded me of my mother. Her birthday was on Valentine’s Day, and she collected and filled my childhood home with heart-shaped objects, including rocks. Every February 14th, I gave her some sort of heart. I still search for heart-shaped rocks, even though she is no longer with us.
