In the summer of 1944, a good friend returned from active duty. He landed in Philadelphia. My girlfriend and I decided to take a train to Philly to welcome him back to the U.S.A. We were even hoping to see the Liberty Bell. It was extremely hot on our trip so all the train windows were open. The black smoke was rolling in. Our Navy friend barely recognized us in our soot covered outfits.
Our train ride home was another smokey journey. Upon our return we had to go straight to work. What a mess we were, covered in soot!
It took us a long time to get over all that soot and we never did make it to the Liberty Bell. It was a memorable Philadelphia adventure.
So Long Philly!
